Change My Policy: Tips on Mid-Term Adjustments

Bob Dylan once said, “The times they are a-changin”. Change is inevitable, and whilst you are a Carrot Insurance Services customer, you might need to update your policy. Whether you’re new to driving or already have some miles behind you, here are some tips to help you navigate these changes with ease.

Carrot Insurance Services: Common Policy Updates

With over 10 years of providing black box insurance for young drivers, we understand the everyday changes our customers require. Let’s look at some of the more common ones supplied by our Carrot Insurance Services team and why they’re important:

  • Change of Address: Update your address to keep your policy information accurate. Not updating your policy details so they are current could render it invalid in case of an accident or claim.
  • New Vehicle: If you’ve purchased a new car, update your policy to cover it. Just to be clear: this is a one-vehicle policy so you can only have one car insured at a time.
  • Adding/Removing a Driver: To add a friend or family member to your policy, use the Customer Portal. Note that an additional premium may apply. If someone listed on your policy no longer drives your car, get them removed from the policy. Updating your policy can help maintain an accurate premium.
  • Change in Usage: For whatever reason, what you use your car for may change. Let Carrot Insurance Services know, as we can adjust your coverage accordingly. The different types of usage include:
      • Social, Domestic and Pleasure: Covers personal, everyday driving (e.g., shopping, visiting friends), plus commuting to one place of study.
      • Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Commuting: Includes Social, Domestic, and Pleasure coverage plus commuting to one place of work.
      • Personal Business Use: Covers all the above plus travelling to more than one place or work, e.g. visiting clients or attending meetings. This is separate to and does not include commercial usage e.g. deliveries.
  • Change in Annual Mileage: If your driving habits change — maybe you’re commuting less or taking more road trips — updating your estimated annual mileage helps keep your premium accurate. You will need to increase your miles if you go over the amount you disclosed when you took out the policy.
  • Change in Employment: A new job can result in a different commute. Let us know if you change your occupation. From sales assistant to student, small changes like this can significantly impact your premium.
  • Change in Personal Details: Whenever you update your personal details, such as a marriage or personal circumstances, make sure to keep your policy current with the most up to date information.
  • Change of Overnight Location: If you start parking your car at a different location overnight, even changing from on a drive to on a public road, update your policy to reflect this change. This can impact your premium and be crucial in the event of a claim.

Top Considerations When Making a Change to Your Policy

  • Impact on Premium: Any changes to your policy, such as adding a driver or modifying your vehicle, can affect your premium. Make sure you understand how the adjustment will impact your overall cost. Don’t be afraid to ask questions so everything is 100% clear before you proceed.
  • Driving Behaviour Monitoring: Since Carrot Insurance Services uses a black box to monitor driving behaviour, consider how changes might affect this. For example, adding a new driver with different driving habits could influence your tracked behaviour and premium. Be sure only to add people you trust to drive safely and within the speed limit.
  • Coverage Needs: Evaluate whether your current coverage still meets your needs. If you’ve made significant changes, like starting a new job that requires you use your car for commuting when you didn’t before, you will need to let us know.
  • Policy Terms and Conditions: Read and understand the terms and conditions of your policy to make sure that the changes you want to make are allowed. Some adjustments might require additional documentation or approval from the insurer. For example, a change of address can potentially change the price of your premium
