What is a black box?

A black box (or telematics device) is a small device that attaches to your windscreen. It monitors how you drive by considering several details. These include speed, acceleration, braking, time of day when driving, and journey length. A black box gives young drivers valuable insight into how they are driving and how to improve.

They help insurance companies keep costs down for young drivers by encouraging safer driving and identifying higher-risk behaviour early.

How does it work?

Our black box works by monitoring your journeys from the windscreen of your car. Each journey you take is supported by your black box, which sends data to our Better Driver by Carrot app.

How can it support young drivers?

A black box can help young drivers like you build confidence behind the wheel. By providing insights into your driving habits, it highlights what's going well and where there may be opportunities to improve. Over time, this can help you develop safer driving behaviours and improve your overall Driving Score. Drivers who achieve a good score may also have the opportunity to earn a discount at renewal.
